A man accused of a brutal rape five years ago has been convicted on charges of sexual assault and assault, according to the Anchorage district attorney's office.
Douglas Artemie, 38, was accused of raping and severely beating a woman in February 2003 during an attack that left her with life-threatening injuries that required surgery, prosecutors said.
In a verdict returned Monday, the jury convicted him on one count of first-degree sexual assault and one count of first-degree assault but acquitted him on another count of sexual assault, prosecutors said.
The jury subsequently returned an aggravating circumstance in the case, that it was a most serious offense, prosecutors said.
Artemie is facing up to 60 years in prison at his sentencing Feb. 13.
