A scam involving an e-mail purporting to be from Wal-Mart came to the attention of Anchorage police Monday when a copy of it hit an in-box belonging to the supervisor of the cyber crimes unit.
Though the e-mail appeared to be a customer satisfaction survey, Sgt. Ron Tidler said it was obviously a credit card scam that has been circulating online.
The message offers the chance to win a $150 gift certificate by agreeing to complete the survey, then directs users to a hoax Web site. Once there, users are prompted to fill out the survey and enter in their credit card and pin numbers so the $150 can be applied to their accounts, police said.
Tidler confirmed with Wal-Mart that the e-mail is a scam and that the company does not ask for personal financial information through e-mails.
Recipients of this scam e-mail or others are asked to report Internet fraud at www.ic3.gov.
