'Rebel' priest will return to service

An Anchorage-based priest with the Orthodox Church in America who was fired from a teaching position during a period of church turmoil has regained the post and also has been named to two high-level positions, the Alaska diocese said in a written statement.

The Rev. Michael Oleksa, an archpriest, has been named acting chancellor of the Russian Orthodox Diocese of Alaska. He also will represent the diocese on the Orthodox Church national executive board. In addition, this spring he will resume teaching his course on the church's history in Alaska at St. Herman's Seminary in Kodiak.

The statement called him a "rebel" priest. He was one of the Alaska priests who spoke out earlier this year against the management style of Bishop Nikolai Soraich, who was forced to retire.
