Anchorage police are ready to begin their latest police academy with the largest class the department has seen in some time, city officials said this week.
The academy will have 36 recruits from across the country who will make up the replacement staff for police officers expected to retire in the next year, police said.
The recruits were selected from a pool of more than 1,600 applicants. They will begin a 22-week training session beginning Dec. 1. After finishing the academy, the recruits will undergo a minimum of 14 weeks of field training under the supervision of an experienced officer.
Eight civilian employees are also scheduled to fill vacant positions.
