POPULATION: 74 (2007)

LOCATION: On Atka Island, 1,200 air miles southwest of Anchorage and 350 air miles east of Unalaska.

DESCRIPTION: A traditional Unangas settlement, where more than 91 percent of the population is wholly or partly Alaska Native. Exposure to the outside world has brought changes to their traditional lifestyle, but the Aleut language is still spoken in one of every four homes. A small local fish processing plant, Atka Pride Seafoods, operates seasonally to serve the local fleet. A number of offshore fish processors carry out crew changes through Atka. A reindeer herd of more than 2,500 head provides a source of meat. The one school is attended by about 20 students.

HISTORY: The island has been occupied by Unangas for at least 2,000 years. After the Japanese attacked Unalaska and seized Attu and Kiska in June 1942, the U.S. government evacuated Atka residents to the Ketchikan area. The community was rebuilt by the U.S. Navy after the war, and residents were allowed to return.
