Troopers say no one was injured by the bullet or broken glass that sprayed the room at about 11:30 a.m., but the teacher and students were evacuated to another area and the school was locked down as a precaution.

Investigators from Kotzebue arriving on scene determined the shot, which lost its velocity after piercing the window and fell to the floor near a wall, came from a rifle belonging to Chester Ballot Sr., 65.

Ballot had been hunting caribou with a Remington .30-06 rifle about a mile and a half away from the school when he missed his target caribou and sent the round into the school, troopers said.

Troopers have not determined if Ballot will face criminal charges.
