Firemen responding to a cooking fire in an East Anchorage apartment stumbled on more than 50 pot plants Saturday night, according to the Anchorage Police Department.
Someone living in the apartment building at 4660 Reka Drive called 911 Saturday evening to report smoke. When firefighters arrived, they found the apartment empty, something burning on the stove and 25 marijuana plants, said Anita Shell, police spokeswoman.
The firefighters put out the fire and then did a sweep to make sure no one was in the apartment. That's when they found the bathroom had been converted into a hothouse, with 25 plants inside.
No one was home at the time, but when the occupants, a couple in their 50s, returned, police were waiting for them with a lot of questions, Shell said.
"They said they did not want to talk about it," she said.
Police say they have forwarded the case to the district attorney's office.
