POPULATION: 315 (2007)
LOCATION: On the Kuskokwim River just south of its confluence with the Takotna River in the west central Interior, 221 miles northwest of Anchorage and 269 miles southwest of Fairbanks.
DESCRIPTION: A transportation, communications and supply hub for the Interior. A bit more than half the population is Alaska Native. McGrath offers a variety of job opportunities and a diverse cash economy, but subsistence remains an important part of the local culture.
HISTORY: McGrath was a seasonal Upper Kuskokwim Athabascan village used as a meeting and trading place for Big River, Nikolai, Telida and Lake Minchumina residents. The discovery of gold in the area in 1906 and 1907 made McGrath a regional supply center.
