Vessel master Jim Brewer and crewman Jay Kingsley abandoned the 42-foot fishing vessel American Way after losing engine power, the Coast Guard said. The men used a raft to reach the shore about 100 feet away, hauling food, warm clothes and fire-starting materials.

The Coast Guard picked up an emergency locator beacon from the vessel at about 3 p.m. About 40 minutes later, Brewer called the Coast Guard on a satellite phone to report he and Kingsley were safe on the northernmost point of the Semidi Islands to the southwest of Kodiak, the Coast Guard said.

A Jayhawk helicopter from Kodiak picked the men up at about 6:30 p.m. and delivered them to Chignik, the Coast Guard said.
