Blaze in home may be tied to space heaters

Space heaters are the suspected cause of a fire that broke out in a Fairview home early Monday morning and destroyed the structure, according to the Anchorage Fire Department.

Smoke and fire were spotted coming from the home at 1326 Karluk St. at about 12:45 a.m. and arriving firefighters found a heavy blaze burning in the living room and venting into the attic and roof. Crews brought the fire under control in about 45 minutes.

Firefighters reported no injuries; the home's occupant had been previously hospitalized and was not home when the fire broke out, firefighters said.

The fire caused an estimated $150,000 in damage, the department said. Its cause remained under investigation Monday, but firefighters said it appeared to have started in the area of the living room, where one of several portable heaters found throughout the home was located.
