Citywide Cleanup, the 37th annual, sponsored by Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, includes free residential dumping at local landfills and transfer stations and today's Cleanup Day based at local elementary schools. Free dumping is at Anchorage Regional Landfill (Glenn Highway at Hiland Road) and Anchorage Central Transfer Station (54th Avenue and Juneau Street): 8 a.m.-5 p.m. -- and at Girdwood Transfer Station on Ruane Road, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Loads must be hauled in a car, unmodified pickup trailer or trailer with the load not to exceed the size of a standard pickup bed (8 feet by 5.5 feet wide and 3 feet high). The load must be covered or secured to prevent spillage in transit and must not exceed 1,000 pounds. All loads exceeding these limits will be weighed and charged at $45 per ton. Vehicles with unsecured or improperly covered loads will be charged a $10 fee. Free disposal includes five gallons of waste oil, one car battery and up to 40 pounds of household hazardous waste per day. Walk & Roll for Hope is today in Anchorage and Eagle River, the biggest annual fund-raiser for Hope Community Resources, now in its 36th year. The walk raises an average of $80,000-$100,000 a year statewide and benefits more than 720 Alaskans who experience a developmental disability. Participants can walk, run, bike or rollerblade along the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail in distances of 2, 5, 10 or 22 miles, starting at 1600 A St. The Eagle River event starts at Chugiak Senior Center, progressing nine miles along the Glenn Highway bike path to Eagle River Lions Park. Shuttle service is available from various check-stations. Start between 8 and 10 a.m. and enjoy food and games afterward. The Mat-Su walk is May 21.
