Steve MacDonald, long-time newsman on KTUU Channel 2, has been rehired by the station after being unexpectedly let go two weeks ago.
MacDonald will no longer be a regular anchor but will return to his duties as news director, the station said in a written press release.
There were no details about what led to either his firing or his rehiring.
"We learned this week that even though we are in the communication business ... we can be better internal communicators,'' Susan Lucas, the station's general manager, said in the statement.
"In the past few months Alaska has gone through perhaps the most intense news cycle in its history. The hectic day-to-day coverage of those events never gave us a real chance to look towards the future of our newsroom."
MacDonald's firing ignited a public protest on talk radio and online. A page built in his honor on Facebook now has more than 700 fans.
