Road traffic between Anchorage and Seward will be blocked all weekend while the state installs temporary replacements for two older bridges on the Seward Highway.
The highway will be closed at Mile 24 -- at the Falls Creek bridge south of Moose Pass -- from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.
The Alaska Department of Transportation said that recent inspections showed the Falls Creek and nearby Ptarmigan Creek bridges need to be replaced.
"This is a temporary fix," said DOT project engineer Tal Maxwell.
This weekend, the state will install two temporary bridges. Within a few years, the temporary truss-style bridges will be replaced with permanent spans, he said.
The highway shutdown will not affect road traffic between Anchorage and Kenai/Soldotna.
