JUNEAU -- A cruise ship operator has been fined $50,000 for polluting state waters in a 2007 grounding about 20 miles southwest of Juneau.
Juneau District Court Judge Keith Levy on Friday suspended three-fourths of a $200,000 fine against American West Steamboat Co. for violating a law that makes polluting state waters illegal. A small sheen was reported after the grounding, but officials say the potential for a much larger spill was significant.
Federal officials blamed the grounding on a decision by ship officers to put an inexperienced junior mate on the night watch.
On May 14, 2007, the 300-foot passenger vessel grounded on a charted rock at the intersection of Lynn Canal and Icy Strait in Southeast Alaska. All 281 passengers and crew members were safely evacuated.
