Hamilton, 64, made his intentions known this afternoon while his bosses, the Board of Regents, were meeting in Fairbanks.

No firm date has been set for his departure from the job he's held since 1998, but Hamilton said he wanted the regents to know his plans so they can get started on the search for his replacement.

Regents chair Cynthia Henry said Hamilton will be difficult to replace. She praised his advocacy for the university and his ability to communicate with the public and the Legislature.

Hamilton is 12th president of the 16-campus University of Alaska system. Before being hired, he served 31 years of active duty in the Army, retiring in 1998 as a major general, according to a biography on the university Web site. His last Army position was head of national recruiting.
