Firefighters stop Jewel Lake blaze

A fire broke out at a Jewel Lake-area duplex early Tuesday, causing serious damage to one unit, according to the Anchorage Fire Department. The department got the call of the fire near the intersection of 78th Avenue and Cranberry Street just before 1:30 a.m., firefighters said.

When the first crew arrived, the deck and front of the single-story structure were engulfed in flames, firefighters said. No one was inside the home when the fire broke out. The blaze was declared under control in about 30 minutes.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
