ANCHORAGE -- Officials began work this week clearing out brush along Campbell Creek between Piper Street and Elmore Road in an effort to reduce the danger of wildfires in the area and improve trail safety, according to the Anchorage Fire Department.
Efforts to thin and prune trees in the area, which was the site of a 10-acre wildfire last summer, started in 2003, the department said.
There is "substantial evidence of fire use" in the area, a known spot for homeless camps, and the dense trees and fallen limbs provide fuel for runaway fires, the department said.
The clearing efforts, being conducted by the Pioneer Peak Hotshots, are expected to last about two weeks, the department said.
