Robert Schmoll of the state Division of Forestry says the fires are southwest of Fairbanks along the edges of the Minto Flats State Game Refuge.

He says they pose no major risk to populated areas. A helicopter crew and a squad of firefighters went out, and Schmoll says they have a good handle on the fires.

He says the department's managers avoid overcommitting to rural, remote fires at the expense of planning for major fires. He notes that hot, dry weather is expected through the weekend.
