POPULATION: 124 (2006)

LOCATION: On the east bank of the Innoko River, a tributary of the Yukon, about 20 miles east of Anvik.

DESCRIPTION: A Deg Hit'an Athabascan community that is nearly 97 percent Alaska Native and that relies on subsistence activities. Jobs are limited primarily to the city and the school, which has about 35 students, and to summer construction projects. At the time of the April 2000 U.S. census, median household income was $26,667, per capita income was $7,587 and 16 percent of residents were living below the official U.S. poverty level.

HISTORY: Shageluk was first reported as "Tie'goshshitno" in 1850 by Lt. Zagoskin of the Russian Navy.
