WASILLA -- A 24-year-old Palmer woman was killed and another woman hospitalized after a high-speed head-on collision early Friday on the Palmer-Wasilla Highway.
Denise L. Zehrung was driving westbound in a green 1995 Pontiac Grand Am when she crossed the center line and hit a purple 1999 Jeep Cherokee about 4:30 a.m. at Mile 6.5, Alaska State Troopers said.
The Jeep's driver, Judy A. Deguia, 50, of Wasilla, was taken to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center with serious injuries, troopers said; Zehrung died in the crash.
Matanuska-Susitna Borough Director of Emergency Services Dennis Brodigan described the accident as a high-speed collision.
"The vehicles came to rest about 300 feet apart," he said.
Brodigan said he was unsure of the road conditions at the time of the accident, but, "When I drove to work this morning it was snowing."
Both the Jeep and the Pontiac were totaled, according to troopers. Deguia and Zehrung were both wearing seat belts.
