FAIRBANKS -- A Seattle woman was killed Saturday night when her car hit a moose and then a guardrail before landing upside down in the North Fork Chena River near Fairbanks.

Carol Matheny, 42, died at the scene, Alaska State Troopers said.

Matheny hit the moose at Mile 39.5 of the Chena Hot Springs Road. Her 2004 Subaru Legacy slammed into a guardrail, left the roadway and landed in the river.

Troopers said the car was partially submerged in the river when they reached the site of the accident.
