Don't light that fire; burn permits suspended because of dryness

(Published: July 4th)

MAT-SU -- Persisting dry and windy conditions in the Mat-Su have caused the Alaska Division of Forestry to temporarily suspend all area burn permits until further notice.

The division has also issued a red flag warning for the Copper River Basin because of the conditions and urges people to use caution while using cooking or warning fires over the weekend.

The burn permit suspension includes burn barrels. Residents can get more information about it, including when it will be lifted, by calling the Mat-Su burn permit hotline at 761-6312.

Also, the division is asking the public to watch commercial fireworks displays and to avoid lighting fireworks illegally. Under Alaska law, disposing of any burning material, including fireworks, on public or private forested lands is prohibited, according to the division.

Violators can be fined up to $500 and could also be responsible for damage and containment costs should their actions start a wildfire, the division said.
