Police, troopers target drivers who drink or speed this weekend

(Published: July 4th)

SOUTHCENTRAL -- Law enforcement officers plan to hit the streets -- and skies -- in force this holiday weekend to crack down on drunk drivers, speeders and other traffic scofflaws, according to Anchorage police.

The joint effort between police and Alaska State Troopers will include a troopers helicopter hovering above the Anchorage Bowl and the Seward Highway safety corridor to watch for violators, police said.

Increased scrutiny is already in effect and will last until Monday, according to police.

Police and firefighters also remind Anchorage residents that fireworks are illegal within the boundaries of the municipality and to use caution when using campfires. Fires should be monitored at all times and completely extinguished when no longer needed.

About 90 percent of the fires reported to the Alaska Interagency Coordination Center this year have been human-caused.
