The agency said the eagle died Tuesday while undergoing surgery for an ailment. It was about 22 years old and lived most its life in captivity at the Patoka Lake Visitors Center near Birdseye in southern Indiana. The eagle was named C52 for its identification tag number.

The eagle came to Indiana's Lake Monroe from its nest in Tongass National Forest in Alaska in July 1988. It was to be released in the wild, but a damaged wing reduced its ability to survive outside captivity.

The remains were sent to the National Eagle Repository in Commerce City, Colo., in keeping with federal law.
