Sewage overflows; kids go home

School officials sent 680 Central Middle School students home Tuesday morning because of a sewage backup. The raw sewage overflowed just after 10 a.m. because of a block in underground pipes, said assistant superintendent Rhonda Gardner.

School administrators made the immediate decision to get the kids out of the building because of potential health hazards, she said.

Seventh-graders were sent next door to Chugach Optional, an elementary charter school, while eighth-graders were bused about a mile southwest to Romig Middle School.

School officials asked parents to pick up their kids, which most did. Students who were not picked up -- about 100 -- returned to the school after workers cleaned the mess and just before the end of the official school day. School buses ran on schedule.

School will open on schedule today at Central, which is at 15th Avenue and D Street.
