Thunderstorms dampen but don't douse Interior forest fires

Thunderstorms moving through the area north and west of Nenana have somewhat slowed the advance of the Minto Flats South and Lunch Lake fires, the state Department of Natural Resources reported this morning.

But the short periods of only several hundredths of an inch of precipitation are not enough to stop the fires.

Firefighters are working to protect about 49 threatened structures -- cabins and Native allotments -- along the Tanana and Kantishna rivers, according to a written statement from the department. A drilling rig for the Doyon Arctic Wolf gas operation has been secured, and drill operations are continuing.

Smoke from the fires is drifting south as far as Anchorage.

Extreme caution with all open fires is strong urged.
