Charlie Johnson, a former chairman of the Alaska Federation of Natives and a longtime Native leader from Nome, died Thursday in Anchorage of heart failure. He was 72.

Russell H. Pace died from Alzheimer's holding his wife's hand on October 23, 2011. He was a very young 79 years old. Russ was born in Westville OK, on March 1, 1932. He won a full mathematical college scholarship and declined it to join the Air Force and move to Alaska in 1952. The Air Force would not extend his rotation in Alaska so he left the military because of his love for this beautiful state.

Mary Marjorie (Arbanas) Joyner, 83, died on April 19, 2011, at St. Elias Specialty Hospital, due to complications following surgery. Marge, as her friends and family knew her, was born on Nov. 29, 1927, in Yakima, Wash., to Walter J. Arbanas and Marguerite O'Brien. She spent her childhood in Wapato, Wash., where she excelled in athletic pursuits of all kinds: swimming, tennis and skiing in particular.

Dr. William J. Mills, III, 53, died Tuesday evening, March 15, 2011. After being severely injured in a skiing accident, he passed away at Providence Alaska Medical Center, surrounded by his family.
Bailey served Alaska's Girl Scouts
In 1950, Marjory S. Bailey left the national staff of the Girl Scouts to stay in Alaska permanently and became the first executive director of the newly chartered Susitna Girl Scout Council, headquartered in Anchorage, a post she held until her retirement in 1982. Marjory Bailey, 90, died May 17, 2008, in Anchorage.
