Alaska Ear

The divine appendage

SNARK ALERT ... Earwigs are calling that "congratulations" press release from Sarah on the resignation of long-time Juneau Sen. Kim Elton the snarkiest ever. (He left for a job with the Obama administration.)

The fact that Elton's an easygoing guy who is pretty well liked across party lines made it even more surprising. You've-got-mail alerts went off all over the state as people who read it asked "Huh?" Here's a sample:

"Senator Elton pledged his allegiance to President Obama last summer. We wish him well as he moves on and hope that he uses this job for Alaska's benefit ..."

Maybe it was that Troopergate stuff that happened in the Senate?

Read the whole statement (it's a PDF).

REMEMBER WHEN ... Having no life, Ear was reading through a stack of travel authorizations from the Knowles administration and came across this sign of old times: 1/25/01 Susan Knowles, $42 per diem for "Attending VECO Christmas event with Governor."

Oh, the memories.

SARAH MARVEL ... The new Sarah comic book is in town, available at Bosco's. Ear thought it was going to be the adventures of Super Hero Sarah and Spiderman, like the Obama one that sold a zillion copies once they put his picture on the cover. But it's a biography, sort of. If you need details, check Kyle Hopkins' story and photos on the Alaska Politics blog .

A QUESTION ... What happened to one of Ear's favorite TV babes, KTVA news anchor Raegan Scott? She used to do the 10 p.m. newscast on weeknights but vanished Thursday. Ear actually tried to gather facts but got only "her contract wasn't renewed."

SOUND THE ALARM ... From the ever-popular Unalaska police blotter: "Welfare Check -- Caller reported a male in a black jacket walking next to and sometimes in the roadway. Officer contacted the subject, who was flattered that someone was concerned for him."

"Suspicious Person/Activity -- A man requested assistance from a business owner regarding how to use his iPod. The business owner agreed, but apparently did not assist the man quickly enough and he began to verbally bait and berate the owner, culminating in the business owner stating he was going to call the police and the patron threatening to burn the building down. Under investigation."

And, not to be outdone, here's one from the Palmer police department:

"On March 1, 2009, Palmer Police received a report that (Samuel T.) age 68 of Palmer, was bitten by his cat."

HE'S OUR GUY ... Earwigs who subscribe to Redbook report that Rudi von Imhof is a finalist in the magazine's annual "Hottest Husband" contest. Rudi, 39, was nominated by his wife, Natasha, one of Cathy and Ed Rasmuson's kids. The winner will be chosen from the 25 finalists by an online vote and announced in the July issue.

A publicist for Redbook says the prize is an 8-day trip to a fancy Grand Cayman resort.

Rudi runs RNV Management Services. And yes, he's the son of Chris von Imhof, who ran Alyeska resort for years.

OR NOT ... An earwig leafing through the Feb. 23 issue of New York Magazine came across something called "The Approval Matrix." And right there, under the "Highbrow" and "Brilliant" section of the grid is this blurb: "William L. Iggiagruk Hensley's moving memoir 'Fifty Miles From Tomorrow' takes Alaska back from Sarah Palin."

Has anyone told Willie?

KUDOS ... What do the following have in common: Elizabeth Peratrovich, Kay Fanning, Susan Butcher, Carol Comeau, Celia Hunter, Marvel Crosson, Arliss Sturgulewski, Evangeline Atwood, Dana Fabe, Katie Hurley? They're 10 of the 50 Alaskans inducted Friday into the new Alaska Women's Hall of Fame at the BP Energy Center

The goal is to honor women, in perpetuity, whose contributions have influenced the direction of Alaska in any field. Read the full list.
