OUT AND ABOUT . . . So who were all those suits having lunch with Don Young, Congressman for All Alaskans who Voted for Him, on Wednesday at Simon's? Those guys who were assuring Don that Mayor Dan Sullivan is probably the GOP's best bet to beat The Boy Senator when he runs for re-election. Which doesn't happen until the next decade, right? Nothing like planning ahead. How about Sullivan's chances of beating Young in a Republican primary even before then?
YES OR NO . . . According to a blurb in the newsletter of the Alaska Support Industry Alliance, Andrew Halcro is going to "make an announcement regarding his political future" at an Alliance breakfast on Sept. 10.
The Alliance is a non-profit that supports oil and mining.
LATEST BLATHER . . . The grapevine has finally decided what She Who was Governor plans to do with the rest of her life. And, of course, it's Ear's duty to report this most recent rumor. This one has Sarah and the family settling in Rhode Island (Huh?) with $7 million from her book and a contract with FOX. And, oh yes, she's never running for office again.
Ear doesn't vouch for any of this so please don't write to complain about how it's just another silly rumor. Of course it's not true (probably) but it's not untruer than all the other stuff being written.
ANOTHER QUIZ . . . So, who signed a proclamation declaring April 16, 2008 "Healthcare Decisions Day," that included the following:
"WHEREAS, the Foundation for End of Life Care in Juneau, Alaska, and other organizations throughout the United States have endorsed this event and are committed to educating the public about the importance of discussing healthcare choices and executing advance directives."
Yes, d'Ears, the death panel lady herself.
Maybe Todd sneaked into her office late one night and forged her signature.
A QUESTION . . . Is that "30-something rocker chick" being trashed by bloggers for allegedly being a bad influence on Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler the same Erin Brady who ran KRUA, the UAA radio station, back in the '90s? Is she actually former DNR Commissioner (under Cowper) Judy Brady's daughter?
Hmmm. Does anyone think Tyler needs someone's influence to behave badly?
EXCITING EVENT . . . Earwigs report the first revolutionary change under the Parnell administration: The governor's office now returns phone calls from people having legit business with them. She Who was Governor and her staff had a terrible reputation in this area.
KUDOS . . . Earwigs report blogger Shannyn Moore, a regular on the Huffington Post.com and her own blog (shannynmoore.wordpress.com), won the top award at the progressive Netroots Nation convention this past week in Pittsburgh -- the Gilliard Grant of Merit for Journalism. Shannyn is from Homer and looks headed for big times Outside.
GOING GLOBAL . . . "Teaming with Microbes, A gardener's guide to the soil food web," by Jeff Lowenfels and Wayne Lewis will soon be available in Korean. It is already out in French and, of course, English.
JOB OPENING . . . Have you ever seen a help wanted ad for a state commissioner? Ear sure hasn't. There was that phony request for applications for U.S. Senator floated by Frank the Bank, and you saw how that played out.
Well, Gov. Parnell's office Friday issued a press release that said he is "seeking applications for the appointed position of adjutant general of the state of Alaska and commissioner of the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs."
Ship those resumes to Mike Nizich by Aug. 31.
There is a little hitch of course. "To be considered for the position of adjutant general, an applicant must be a resident of the state and must be a federally recognized general-grade officer in the Alaska National Guard, or an officer eligible to be promoted ..."
Oh well. Never mind.
