KODIAK -- In a rare public appearance since a federal judge threw out charges against him for accepting illegal gifts, former Sen. Ted Stevens was in Kodiak on Thursday to be honored by United Fishermen of Alaska.
At a banquet on the U.S. Coast Guard base, he joined 20 other charter members to become part of UFA's "Seafood Hall of Fame."
Stevens also received a lifetime achievement award for his work on the Magnuson-Stevens Act, originally passed in 1976, which protects fishing within 200 miles of U.S. shores, and creates standards for sustainable fisheries management and harvest, said Mark Vinsel, UFA's executive director.
UFA also honored his support of a ban on high-seas drift nets and efforts to stop illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, he said.
Gov. Sarah Palin spoke as part of the event, Vinsel said. UFA is an umbrella organization with 37 member groups, representing fishing fleets of Alaska and offshore waters.
