FAIRBANKS -- Luke Hopkins has won the race for Fairbanks North Star Borough mayor.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported that Hopkins widened his lead over Tammie Wilson when early, absentee and questioned ballots were counted Tuesday. Hopkins won with 9,107 votes, nearly 850 more than Wilson.
Wilson told the News-Miner he's ready to be mayor and to get to work. He takes office Monday.
The 61-year-old Hopkins is a part-time land manager at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He said he will keep taxes low while maintaining services.
Wilson, 48, is a former teacher who promised to cut taxes and shrink government if elected.
Hopkins will be the 10th mayor of the Fairbanks North Star Borough.
