Holiday break a much-needed respite for struggling UAA

The disappointing first half UAA endured makes the holiday break that has arrived as beneficial for the Seawolves from an emotional standpoint as much as a physical one.

Namely, these guys could use some time away from the game after starting the WCHA season at 1-8-3. That record, worth five points and scuttling UAA to the basement of the 12-team league, marks the worst 12-game league start in coach Dave Shyiak's eight seasons and the second-worst, 12-game league start in the program's 20 seasons in the WCHA.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but that five points in the first 12 league games is just one point more than the infamous 2002-03 team, which went 0-22-6 in league. That club was 0-8-4, worth four points, through 12 games.

Here's how Shyiak's teams have done through their first 12 league games:

2012-13 -- 1-8-3, 5 points

2011-12 -- 2-8-2, 6 points

2010-11 -- 4-6-2, 10 points

2009-10 -- 4-8-0, 8 points

2008-09 -- 4-6-2, 10 points

2007-08 -- 2-7-3, 7 points

2006-07 -- 6-6-0, 12 points

2005-06 -- 3-8-1, 7 points
