UAF beats No. 5 Notre Dame, 5-4, on goal with 3 seconds left

Jarret Granberg's second goal of the game tonight, with a mere three seconds left, spurred UAF to a 5-4 road victory against No. 5-ranked and CCHA-leading Notre Dame.

Granberg, who finished with 2-1--3 totals and entered the night with three goals in 18 games, also scored earlier in the third period. The Nanooks (9-8-4, 7-7-3 CCHA) have won three straight games and the Fighting Irish (15-7-0, 11-3-0 CCHA) have lost three straight, and four of their their last five.

Beyond the obvious Alaska connections -- it is UAF, duh -- there were several more. Austin Wuthrich of Anchorage scored a goal for the Irish, who got 22 saves from goaltender Steve Summerhays of Anchorage. Prior to Granberg's winner, the Irish got a game-tying goal with about four minutes to go from Mario Lucia, who was born in Fairbanks and is the son of current Minnesota and former UAF bench boss Don Lucia.

While we're talking Fairbanks area -- we are, right? -- note that Michigan Tech freshman goalie Phoenix Copley of North Pole racked 25 saves tonight to earn his third shutout with a 4-0 win over visiting Bemidji State. That win lifted Tech into a tie with Bemidji for 10th place in the 12-team WCHA -- they both have 11 points, which puts them six points clear of last-place UAA, which entertains Minnesota State-Mankato and freshman goaltender Stephon Williams of Fairbanks here in about an hour at Sullivan Arena.
