Wait - salmon's BAD for you?

The London Daily Mail website cites an Ohio State University study claiming that omega-3 fatty acids, the wonder ingredient in salmon, increases the risk of high-grade prostate cancer 71 percent and all prostate cancers by 43 percent. The sample size was more than 2,000 people and the results replicate and confirm findings of a 2011 study. 

According to lead scientist Dr Alan Kristal, from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, the difference between in the omega-3 in the blood of the highest and lowest risk is “somewhat greater than the effect of eating salmon twice a week.”

It appears that the test subjects were getting their omegas from eating salmon or taking the popular pills. Kristal said: “We’ve shown once again that use of nutritional supplements may be harmful.”

The study was published on the online edition of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute
