Anchorage Chamber of Commerce Announces Covenant House Alaska’s Grand Opening

ANCHORAGE, AK – The Anchorage Chamber of Commerce will help commemorate the opening of Covenant House Alaska’s new location with a ribbon cutting ceremony at their new facility, starting at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6 at 755 A Street.

Covenant House Alaska will cut the ribbon in conjunction with the organization’s grand opening event, held from 5 to 7 p.m.the same day. Tours will be given to guests and Anchorage Chamber members. Guests are encouraged to car pool and attend both events. Hors d'oeuvres and refreshments will be served.

During nearly 25 years of existence, Covenant House Alaska has grown from an emergency shelter for youth in Crisis to an organization that provides an array of services that assist and help Alaska’s youth to self-sufficiency.  In 1988, Covenant House Alaska became the first shelter for homeless teenagers in Anchorage – and it is still the only such shelter in the city. More than 20,000 young people (ages 13-20) have walked through Covenant House Alaska’s doors.

They have since outgrown their downtown location.

Some come for just a bed for the night, but many also receive medical care, help getting back into school, counseling to reunite with their families, or services that lead to independence through education and employment.

Covenant House Alaska addresses emergency needs and provides preventative services that lead to self-sufficiency for youth.  From July 2011 through June 2012, 5,753 youth were saved from the streets and provided with food, shelter, unconditional love, and care they so desperately needed, as well as support and life skill they needed to put their lives back on track.

The Anchorage Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit business organization of nearly 1,100 members representing 54,000 employees.  For businesses interested in a ribbon cutting ceremony, or membership, please visit Anchoragechamber.org , or call 272-2401
