Prep football: Wasilla, North Pole stop Anchorage teams

A pair of Anchorage teams were on the losing side of things Saturday afternoon in season-opening football action.

Wasilla tripped West 24-14 at Anchorage Football Stadium and North Pole throttled Eagle River 40-8 in Fairbanks.

Wasilla's Cash McGregor intercepted five passes, two of them in the end zone, to lead the Warriors.

McGregor added a six-yard touchdown run for Wasilla, a Railbelt Conference team whose ground game produced a big game for Mitchell Rilatos -- 154 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries.

The Eagles of the Cook Inlet Conference relied on special-teams play for one of its touchdowns, Leroy Elliott's 91-yard kickoff return.

In Fairbanks, North Pole dominated in a performance that might serve as a warning to the state's medium-sized schools.

The Patriots dropped down one classification this season, from the large-school division to the medium-school one. Their convincing victory Saturday came against large-school Eagle River.

In other afternoon action Saturday, Soldotna stomped Eielson 55-19 in a nonconference battle between two medium-school teams. Soldotna plays in the Northern Lights Conference and Eielson is in the Greatland Conference.
