Dimond's Summers blazes in 500 free at state swim meet

The oldest record in Alaska high school swimming survived Friday's preliminary races at the state championships in Juneau, but Dimond's Michael Summers came closer than anyone in more than two decades to taking it down.

Summers swam the second-fastest 500-yard freestyle in the history of the state meet, coming within 2.05 seconds of matching the record set in 1990 by Ben Smith of Service.

Summers clocked a time of 4 minutes, 39.9 seconds. Smith's record is 4:37.85.

Before Friday, no one besides Smith had ever dipped below the 4:40 mark at the state meet, which is the only place where swimmers and divers can establish state records. Last year's champion in the 500 free, Ursin Jackson of Dimond, won in 4:40.94, a time that was the second-fastest in state-meet history until Summers won his heat Friday morning.

Summers, who also was the top qualifier in the 200 free, helped Dimond put eight boys in Saturday's finals, which begin at 11 a.m. at Juneau's Dimond Park Aquatic Center. The Lynx, who are vying for a fifth straight state championship, produced the top two qualifiers in the 500 (Summers, Jacob Hanni) and the 200 free (Summers, Jarod O'Brien).

Kodiak also placed eight boys in the finals and Sitka advanced seven, a group led by Louis Belley, who recorded the top times in the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke.

In girls action, defending state champion Kodiak boasted two girls who emerged as the top qualifiers in two events apiece.

Ila Hughes set the pace in the 100 free and 200 free, and Tahna Lindquist was the fastest in the 200 IM and the 500 free.

Hughes swam a 52.79 in the 100, well off her state-record mark of 50.62 from last season. Lindquist clocked 2:08.39 in the 200 IM, the sixth-fastest time in state-meet history -- the fastest was recorded last season by her now-graduated sister Jorie (2:06.63).

The team with the most spots in Saturday's finals is Juneau, which advanced 11. Ciera Kelly led the Crimson Bears by posting the top times in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.

Dimond, the CIC champs and runner-up to Kodiak at last year's state meet, secured nine spots in the finals. Jenny Wilcox was the No. 2 qualifier in the 200 free and 100 butterfly, while Kari Wray led a group of three Lynx into the finals of the 100 breaststroke.

No records fell Friday, with Summers coming the closest to rewrite the record book. He gets another shot at Smith's record in Saturday's finals.

The only record older than Smith's 500 time is in boys diving, where Alvin Smith's score of 517.25 has survived since 1982.

Divers competed well into the night Friday in Juneau.
