State basketball begins with 1A play-in games Saturday

March Madness Alaska begins with a day’s worth of high-stakes basketball games Saturday at West High and South High.

Sixteen games are on tap for Alaska’s smallest schools— eight girls games, eight boys games.  The winners will advance to the Class 1A state basketball tournament next week at Sullivan Arena.

Among the teams in the field are the defending state champions — the Klawock boys and Cook Inlet Academy girls.

Losers of Saturday’s games will play in a satellite tournament Monday and Tuesday at West High, with the finales scheduled for Wednesday morning at Sullivan.

Class 1A schools are those with 60 or fewer high school students. There are 120 of them in Alaska.
