Alaskan helps Shattuck U-16 girls win national title

Clair DeGeorge of Anchorage became a national champion in hockey Sunday, helping Shattuck-Saint Mary's of Minnesota capture the Tier I U-16 girls national title.

DeGeorge and her teammates claimed a 3-0 victory over Mid-Fairfield of Connecticut in the championship game of the USA Hockey Youth National tournament in Marlborough, Mass.

DeGeorge, a forward who scored one goal and one assist in six tournament games, is a freshman at Shattuck-St. Mary's, a prep boarding school in Faribault, Minn.

Taylor Schwalbe, an Anchorage girl who also attends Shattuck-St. Mary's, wound up on the losing end of the Tier I U-19 championship game Sunday in Marlborough. She and her teammates suffered a 2-0 loss to Assabet Valley of Massaschusetts.

Schwalbe was making her second straight title-game appearance. Last year, she played for Shattuck-St. Mary's U-16 championship girls team.
