Track and field: Carstens wins twice

Nikiski’s Seth Carstens won two field events to lead all athletes on the first day of the 13-team Kenai Invitational on Friday. He cleared six feet to win the high jump and took first in long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 10.5 inches.

Kenai’s Jordan Theisen won the 3,200 meters in 9 minutes, 58.2 seconds while Cook Inlet Academy’s Zach Taplin placed first in shot put with a heave of 46 feet, 9.25 inches.

The three girls finals had three different winners. Wasilla’s Alex Mathis won the 3,200 in 11:52.3. Palmer’s Jonna Laitinen’s throw of 93 feet, 8 inches earned her first in discus. Tayla Cabana of Homer produced a leap of 15 feet, 6.25 inches to win the long jump.

The two-day meet continues Saturday.
