Walk to Cure Diabetes raises more than $38,000

Anchorage, AK, May 11, 2014 — More than 250 people participated in the 2nd annual Anchorage JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, raising more than $38,000. The proceeds raised from the event will fund critically needed type 1 diabetes (T1D) research.

“We are grateful and thrilled to see our community join together to support the millions of people with type 1 diabetes,” said Stephanie Lee, Development Coordinator of JDRF’s Anchorage Chapter. “JDRF has a strategic plan to put an end to this terrible disease, and it is thanks to the dedication of our donors, volunteers, and participants throughout this community, and others that we will reach our vision of a world without type 1 diabetes.”

The energetic and enthusiastic walkers enjoyed a spectacular Saturday walking on the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, starting at 9:00 am and ending at 1:00 pm. At the end, they were rewarded with goodie bags and raffle items provided by many supportive local businesses.  Top teams and individual walkers were also honored by the crowd.

“Thank you to the walk Chair Jessica Beach, the city of Anchorage, and our dedicated volunteers for all of your passion and hard work that made this year’s JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes such a success,” said Lee. “Together, we will put an end to this disease through the support of needed research. Thank you!”

About Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that impacts millions of people around the world. The disease occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, a hormone essential to turning food into energy. Without insulin, glucose from food stays in the blood, where it can cause serious damage to all of the body’s organ systems. T1D strikes both children and adults suddenly and is unrelated to diet or lifestyle. It requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on injected insulin. With T1D there are no days off, and there is no cure.
