Woman dies in home fire in Levelock

A fire early Thursday morning in the Southwest Alaska community of Levelock claimed the life of Pilot Point resident Katherine Achayok, according to the Alaska State Troopers.

Troopers received a report of a fire at a residence in Levelock, population roughly 70, around 3:30 a.m. Thursday. King Salmon troopers arrived around 9:25 a.m.

Troopers said Charles Andrew, 70, had suffered burns while trying to assist Achayok, 59, during the fire, and Andrew was forced to jump through a window to safety.

Andrew had gone to bed around 10 p.m. Wednesday while Achayok was watching television. Both had been smoking cigarettes on the back porch, where the fire appears to have originated, troopers wrote.

The cause of the fire was undetermined on Friday but appeared to be accidental. The structure was a total loss. Achayok’s next of kin were notified.
