Kodiak’s Trevor Dunbar was a fraction of a second too slow to advance to the finals of the men’s 1,500 meters at the USA Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif.
Dunbar finished sixth in his heat with a time of 3 minutes, 45.33 seconds on Thursday. The top four finishers from each of two heats advanced, as did the four fastest remaining runners. Dunbar ran in the first heat, which was significantly slower than the second heat.
Pat Casey won the first heat in 3:44.41, and Leonel Manzano won the second heat in 3:42.01. Of the 12 finalists, eight ran in Manzano’s heat. Al Acosta, who placed fourth in Dunbar’s heat, was the slowest qualifier in 3:45.07.
Dunbar, who recently wrapped up his college career with All-America finishes for Oregon in the 5,000 and 10,000, is scheduled to run in Friday’s 5,000-meter race.
