An eye-catching depiction of the Milky Way by Brielle Dagon is among many impressive sixth-grade astronomy projects on display Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, at Huffman Elementary School. The school will hold a Math and Science Night on March 19th from 6:30-8 p.m., which will include fourth- and fifth-grade Science Fair projects. There will also be a fingerprinting station staffed by the Anchorage Police Department, science activities offered by UAA professors and South High School teachers, and math games.

There are 163 high school students from across the state participating in the three-day event, taking tests in math, economics, science, language and literature, art, music and social science. They also submit an essay and demonstrate speech and interview skills before panels of volunteer judges. To include students from a variety of academic abilities, teams of nine are comprised of A, B and C students competing within their own divisions. The theme for this year's competition is World War I. State championship teams advance to national competition April 24-26 in Hawaii.

The department stocked the lake with approximately 4,300 catchable king salmon before the event. 1,800 students from 34 schools are expected to attend the four day event with up to 150 kids on the ice at a time.
