WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL HOCKEY

Kerry Weiland in Palmer today

Kerry Weiland had to miss the day at the ballpark held in her honor during the baseball season this summer in Palmer, so today she'll be at the Palmer Ice Arena to meet with fans and to sign a Mat-Su Miners baseball card created to honor the home-town hockey player who returned from this year's Winter Olympics with a silver medal.

Olympic medal-winner returns to Palmer High School

Skating on the ice is easy for her, but Olympic hockey silver medalist Kerry Weiland said it was a little more difficult to speak to students Tuesday morning at Palmer High School.

Since graduating from UAA in 2005 with degrees in aviation and journalism, Michelle Bartleman has traded gymnastics and track -- the sports she competed in for the Seawolves -- for the fast track. She's the seventh-ranked women's skeleton racer in Canada and her goal is to make the 2014 Winter Olympics team.

Kikkan Randall got the United States off to a great start but her teammates couldn't continue the pace and wound up finishing 12th in today's relay race at the Winter Olympics.

Not that we expect Alaskans to root for anything other than a gold medal for Palmer's Kerry Weiland in today's gold-medal women's hockey game at the Winter Olympics, but at least one member of the Alaska Aces will be cheering for Canada.

Randall leads US duo to 6th in cross-country team sprint

Kikkan Randall pulled ahead of Sara Renner of Canada on the last of six laps in the team sprint races Monday to come from 8th place past Renner and in a photo finish edged her out of 6th place, the highest place for an American team in this event at a winter Olympics.

Kikkan Randall said she felt medal-winning fast Monday at the Winter Olympics, and the results back her up.

Palmer hockey player Kerry Weiland won an Olympic medal Monday, but she won't know what color it is until Thursday. The victory over Sweden at Vancouver's Canada Hockey Place guarantees Weiland will leave the Winter Olympics with either a gold or silver medal.

Southam leads other Americans in cross-country pursuit

One of 64 racers in the field, James Southam placed 34th to finish as the top American for the second time in these Olympics. He took a spill on a slushy corner on a downhill with two kilometers left in the classic portion of the dual-technique race, a stumble that he said cost him a top-30 finish.
