Palin deserves Alaskans’ support
I have been dismayed at the negative comments about Gov. Palin, especially those coming from fellow Alaskans.
Surely we can all agree that the governor has done a good job, has the best of intentions, and has a great personal story. Her run for vice president is historic and just great for the state. She’s not Mother Teresa, of course. She’s made mistakes. But can’t we all get on board and wish her the best and refrain from playing the national media’s game? I mean if you don’t have something nice to say, just don’t say it.

French defends Alaska’s interests
Three cheers for Hollis French. The Democratic chairman of the Alaska Senate Judiciary Committee demonstrates the courage to stand up to powerful special interests to perform his sworn duty to serve Alaska, not himself. French for governor!

Speech shows Palin has sold out
On Wednesday, I heard a side of our governor that was petty, demeaning and not at all the type of person I want to represent me. I almost hope that she ends up on the winning team so we won’t have to put up with a governor who has dropped to the reprehensible level she has been fighting so hard to change. She sold her soul to the Republican Party for her own 15 minutes of fame.

Free money should be garnished
In response to Katey Lamberson’s letter “Don’t add money to PFD check,” Aug. 11) about not adding the $1,200 to PFD money because of it being garnished for student loans and child support: Sometimes that is the only time of the year some families receive child support so why should this money not be garnished? Why should deadbeats be rewarded with free money when they ditch their responsibility to their children and refuse to get a job and do the responsible thing? Free money should be garnished no matter what it is supposed to be used for, when it comes to owing huge amounts of child support.

Palin stirs pride and inspires
I have never been so proud of our governor or being a resident of this great state as I was after watching Gov. Palin give her speech during the Republican Convention. I work in the governor’s building and have had the extreme pleasure of speaking to her a few times. I am beyond words to describe the kind of person she is and how much I admire her. She is a wonderful person and an excellent female role model!
Gov. Palin — You go girl! Show them what Alaska women are made of! We’re behind you 1,000 percent.

It seems teen sex has odd rules
Premarital teenage sex is now OK if you follow the following ground rules:
1. You do not use contraception.
2. Your parents have enough money to help support you and your mate until you can graduate from high school and get a job at Burger King.
3. You are a dedicated Christian.
4. You are willing to have the baby.
5. You are willing to marry and live happily ever after.
6. You are not a member of the Clinton family.

There’s many reasons to love RVs
This is a response to “Hate RVs?” in the Mat-Su section of the Anchorage Daily News (Aug. 22).
There are over 20 RV parks both public and private in the Mat-Su area trying to make a living by renting spaces to those slow-moving motor homes. These motor homes as well as all other types of RVs bring millions of dollars to the economy not only to the Mat-Su area but to the entire state. They spend money on gas, groceries, souveniors, tours and etc.
During this economic hardship to the nation and the state of Alaska, we should be welcoming RVs with open arms and not bashing them.

Palin gets McCain another vote
When McCain emerged as the GOP pick I thought there was nothing he could do to get my vote. I was wrong. Choosing Sarah Palin for VP changed that.
Sarah’s speech at the Republican National Convention brought tears to my eyes. Even her detractors can see what an intelligent, strong, determined woman can accomplish, with grace, dignity and humor.
I think I speak for many of the 80 percent of Alaskans that support you when I say, Sarah, our pride is showing. Our loss is America’s gain.

Forced high medical costs absurd
Four years ago I went overseas for medical care that was unavailable to me (because of the cost) in the United States.
I was lucky enough to have one of the best surgeons in the world do my surgery, roundtrip travel for my wife and me, two weeks in a hotel, and meals for about one third of what the operation alone would have cost in the U.S.
I love my country, but this is nuts.
We have laws making it illegal to have Medicare negotiate lower prices for drugs. It is illegal for an American individual to buy American drugs that have just been shipped up to Canada at a fraction of the cost. Whose side are these Republicans on, anyway?

Media bias apparent in coverage
ADN, when it comes to Gov. Sarah Palin, you guys just can’t help yourself. She gave a great speech on Wednesday, but yet Thursday morning, you are still trying to trash her. For Pete’s sake, your bias for Obama is clearly showing.

Personality doesn’t qualify Palin
As a voter, I couldn’t care less if Sarah has 20 underage pregnant daughters or if she has killed a moose or if she got up at 5 a.m. to take her child to hockey practice. The issue is whether or not she has the experience and expertise to be vice president. And the answer is clearly no.
It is insulting to me as a professional female to have this woman paraded around on the national stage as the culmination of years of struggles for women’s rights. Surely, if the Republicans actually wanted to advance social change by nominating a female for the office of vice president, they would have found someone who is actually qualified.

Blame taxes on war supporters
In the coming months there will be a lot of campaign talk about taxes. In order to reduce the rhetoric, I have a modest proposal: No candidate who supported George Bush and the Iraq War can say one word about taxes. It is ridiculous to hear candidates complain about taxes for elementary schools, health care, street repair, etc., and yet say nothing about the incredible amount of money that we have squandered in Iraq. Our country would be far more secure and far safer if we had used that money to improve our own energy efficiency and reduce oil imports. How can people with such poor judgment be trusted to use wisely our hard-earned tax dollars?
