Orson Welles would have laughed at Hawaii false alert

Do you think Orson Welles got a chuckle over the false alert in Hawaii?

Thanks for reducing plastic bag pollution

Thank you to the city of Wasilla for your bold move to help reduce plastic bag pollution in the Valley. Thank you Mayor Bert Cottle and council members for your support in passing Ordinance 17-24, which prohibits the distribution of single use plastic bags 2.25 mils or less.

Many thanks also to community councils and individuals across the borough that supported our awareness campaign. Thank you to radio station 95.5 that aired 13 weeks of free ads.

These flimsy bags being banned in the city of Wasilla are the ones most likely to fly out of your hands and garbage trucks then soar into the trees, bushes, and waterways — and ultimately end up in the stomachs of our fish and animals.

You will still be able to find plastic bags in the produce and meat departments of stores, and stores will still be able to bag your groceries — just not in the flimsy single-use plastic bags.

The best solution is to take your own sturdy, reusable bag when shopping!

The Plastic Bag Committee is continuing to work to make the transition easier when the ordinance is takes effect on July 1.

Protect the rights of transgender Alaskans

Thank you, Rev. Matt Schultz (Commentary, Jan. 11) for your accurate description of the Christ I choose to follow. As a mother of 2, I never worry about my daughter being harmed by a transgender person in a bathroom. On the other hand, I am very afraid that my son, who is transgender, will be harmed by someone in a bathroom. Someone who is not transgender, but who is ignorant, self-righteous, or just plain mean.

Both of my children have the soul they were given at birth. Both are equally loved by God. Both deserve the same treatment and protections. I will vote NO on Proposition 1.

Lawmakers need to come together, turn things around

I can't help but compare Sen. Tom Begich's column on Jan. 10 with Sen. Pete Kelly's Jan. 5 comment that "State government is doing fine."

The first legislator acknowledges reality and the second continues to put his head in the sand, or perhaps deliberately mislead his constituents.

Kelly and company need to take Gov. Bill Walker's and the House Majority's ideas seriously and turn things around. This has to happen this legislative session, before any more people get hurt by the callous inaction of legislators like Pete Kelly.
