Letter: Alaska Delegation must reject Kavanaugh

I have followed the processing of the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh for Supreme Court Justice with growing concern. He certainly has not always been forthright in providing information and records. Now, serious evidence has arisen suggesting that he may have committed a felony sexual assault on a juvenile, possibly related to abuse of alcohol.

Since the process began, he has done nothing to extinguish the doubt that he would exercise the checks and balances implied by our Constitution, against the White House, to protect the principle of rule of law, and our institutions charged with enforcing the law. This is particularly important, as we see them under threat on an almost daily basis.

I am not aware of any clear standards to which senators are held for this process, but am confident that if this man was standing for appointment to the Alaska Supreme Court, he would not succeed. Sen. Lisa Murkowski announced earlier that she would review this nominee with “rigorous and exacting” care. I believe that standard justifies our senators’ rejection of this man, and a demand that another be brought forward who can be expected to help restore public confidence in our nation’s highest court.
