Memorial Day fishing

If the past couple of weeks are any indication, expect a glorious Memorial Day weekend of blue skies, barbecues, sunny weather -- and fish?

Well, that may be stretching things unless the fish you seek are small hooligan on the Twentymile River south of Anchorage or halibut in salt water.

As nice as it looks, it's still spring in Alaska and the water is cold.

No matter. Thousands of Alaskans will trek to the Kenai Peninsula to test the waters of the Kenai, Kasilof, Anchor and Ninilchik rivers as well as Deep Creek. Others will head across Cook Inlet to see if the Deshka River king run is as poor as some sport fish biologists suggest.

Perhaps the smartest anglers will stash their fishing poles and pick up clam shovels. Clam Gulch has minus tides for a week beginning Friday, with Memorial Day hitting minus 4.5.
