Sheep herding trials

WHERE: Country Dog Training Center on Farm Loop Road in Palmer

WHAT: The Alaska Australian Shepherd Club is holding a sheep herding trial open to all herding breeds at the center. Sanctioned by the Australian Shepherd Club of America. To compete your dog must be pre-registered. Spectators are welcome, but only dogs competing in the trial may attend.

GLACIER TRAVEL

Cross glaciers safely

WHERE: Matanuska Glacier, Chickaloon

WHAT: Two day workshop for climbers at least 18 on Matanuska Glacier provides instruction on techniques and safety systems needed for glacier travel. Covers knots, harnesses, crampon use, self-arrest, placing protection, and building anchors. Rope teams will practice route-finding and fixed line skills as well as crevasse fall scenarios and raising systems.

WHAT: Reel Rock film tour of climbing and adventure films presented by Alaska Mountaineering and Hiking and Alaska Rock Gym. Features releases from Sender Films and Big UP Productions as well as the winning short films from this year's Reel Rock filmmaking competition. Warren Miller film 'Dynasty'

WHAT: Latest entry in the Warren Miller series on skiers and boarders shredding remote locales. "Dynasty" is the 60th entry in the series and includes some footage from the Chugach. Tickets on sale Sept. 16 include a lift ticket offer to Alyeska Resort.

2 Kodiak king rivers reopen

WHEN: Through Sunday

WHERE: American and Olds rivers on Kodiak

WHAT: King salmon fishing has been reopened to harvest stocked king salmon in this terminal fishery. Bag and possession limit is two kings, with an annual limit of five. Only kings may be kept.

Guided tour of flowers

WHERE: Alaska Botanical Garden

WHAT: A docent will guide you through the Lower and Upper Perennial Gardens, Rock Garden, Herb Garden and Wildflower Trail. The tour will last about one hour, ending back in the nursery in case you'd like to browse for plants or garden gifts.

New trail opening at Alyeska

WHAT: Guided hike to open new North Face Alyeska trail, part of the resort's weekend blueberry festival. At 2 p.m., a ribbon cutting ceremony will be near the top of the tram. Bring water and hiking shoes.

Watch a bore tide
